Practice Your Creativity in Floral Design and Marketing

Students get to flex their creativity and learn about the floral industry in Mrs. Drollinger’s Floral Design class.

Mrs. Drollinger, a teacher of many subjects including Leadership, Introductory Mechanics, Horticulture, Plant Growth and Development, Agricultural Industry, Livestock Industry, Dual Credit Animal Science, and Ag Animal Science, also teaches Floral Design and Marketing.

This class is open to students in both 11th and 12th grade and is unique in the fact that it requires artistic ability more than any other class taught by Drollinger, allowing students to express their creativity through the projects that they create. So far this semester, the students in Drollinger’s class have learned floral plant identification, proper methods for tying bows, and all about the color wheel. From there, they learned about the construction of different floral arrangements and wreaths with hands-on projects.

One of the students’ first projects of the year was to create a color wheel poster, which gave them the necessary skills and knowledge of color combinations for their future projects. After this, the students created boutonnieres and corsages for the homecoming dance and arranged bud vases with carnations. Currently, they are making fall wreath gnomes for the Craft Fair on November 18.

According to Drollinger, “The skills that are learned in this course can definitely benefit everyone in the future.” This is because students would be able to create their own floral arrangements, including boutonnieres and corsages for school dances as well as vases and bouquets for weddings and other events. In addition to this, the class has taught the students useful marketing skills, especially in regards to being a florist which could help them if they choose to pursue a career in floral design or even in other fields of business.

About the Contributor
Alyssa Hardman, Staff Writer
My name is Alyssa Hardman and I am a junior in Ms. Ford’s journalism class at Vallivue High School. I have always been interested in writing, and I hope to pursue a career in writing someday. This is a huge part of why I am in this class as I knew it would give me a better understanding of the differences between certain writing styles. However, I am also in this class simply because I thought that it would be interesting to learn about what was happening around the school and to be able to inform others of these events. I especially enjoy writing stories that allow me to acknowledge people and their successes, and I hope to learn more about the proper process of journalistic writing throughout the rest of the school year.
