This year, Vallivue High School welcomed a lovely new librarian, Mrs. Schroeder! She is enjoying her time at VHS and looks forward to building a fun culture in the library for students and staff.
Mrs. Schroeder was born in Georgia, moved to Alabama where she went to school, until she moved to Idaho and earned her teaching degree. Before becoming a librarian, she taught theater, history, reading, and study skills. She has always loved the library and was a library aide in high school. After being a teacher for years, she decided she really wanted to be in the library instead of the classroom. She was a librarian at a summer school when someone who worked with her knew someone who worked at Vallivue, who asked if they knew anyone who was looking for the position, and she said yes! She says her first impression of the school was that “It was very big compared to the old schools I worked at, and I just love the big windows in the library.”
Mrs. Schroeder’s major goal for the library this year is to encourage students to come into the library and show them all the things it can be used for. She says, “The library is really the heart of the school.” The library offers many genres like mystery, science fiction, romance, thriller, dystopian, literary fiction, poetry, history, graphic novels, and so much more. Students can use the library not only as a place to check out books but a place to read them, play games, build Legos, display work, or for all sorts of clubs! The main clubs that meet in the library right now are the book club, which is picking its first book this month, and the writers club. Technology also plays a big part in the library by making it easier for students to find books.
Currently, she is working on improving the Spanish and manga collection in the library while also wanting to reintroduce IDLA to the Vallivue District, which makes thousands of books accessible online for free for the students! She is also looking to introduce a monthly craft that can be done in the library with students to encourage creativity.
Overall, Mrs. Schroeder loves the library and believes it plays a vibrant part in the school and in students’ lives. When you get the chance, stop by to say hi and check out all the library has to offer!
