VHS’s annual powderpuff game will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 1 during all of the Homecoming Week activities. The game will start at 7:00 pm, and admission is $2 or two canned foods that will be donated locally.
What is powderpuff? A powderpuff game is girls flag football. When asked why we do this game, Mrs. Hammons said that it’s “just something fun” as “an extra thing we do for homecoming.” She also mentioned that the boys version is called “powderbuff” and it is a boys’ volleyball team. Unfortunately, we are not going to do a team this year.
Anybody could have volunteered to play on the team by getting a sign-up sheet from the leadership classroom. The practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00 pm starting on Sept. 15.
The teams are set up with Freshman and Seniors on one team and Sophomores and Juniors on the other. The Freshman and Senior team will wear black shirts and shorts, and the Sophomores and Juniors will wear white shirts and shorts.
Our school is not the only one that does this sort of tradition, In fact, it is done by many universities and high schools as a Homecoming celebration. It actually started in the 1940’s in South Dakota as a Homecoming celebration because most men were away for World War II, and the girls took it into their own hands to celebrate.
