VHS Orchestra Ends the Year With Their Holiday Concert

Multiple students were featured soloists during last week’s concert.

The Vallivue High and Vallivue Middle orchestras performed their holiday concert last week on Tuesday, December 12. The concert was a loosely holiday themed mix of Classical, Baroque, and Modern music as well as a Hebrew piece about hope to lead them into the new year. This concert is about tradition, joy, and hope, and they had quite a few soloists throughout the concert.

VHS orchestra director Mrs. Cameron said that it is difficult for her to choose a favorite piece: “Each ensemble has worked hard on their music selections.” Baroque Era music is one of her favorite types of music, and the piece “Corelli, Op.6 No. 8” (Christmas Concerto) has been one of her favorite pieces ever since the first time she played it in the Corelli Ensemble as a 14 year old. Cameron notes, “This piece is difficult and the VHS Chamber Ensemble will be playing the piece in the traditional manner, without a conductor.”

Her favorite Concert Ensemble piece is “Home Alone” because it is a classic movie with unforgettable music. It allows people to ring in the holidays by watching Home Alone with a cup of hot chocolate with family and friends. This piece allows listeners to sit back and feel like they are at the movies.

“The String Ensemble is playing a piece called ‘Christmas Eve/Sarajevo/12/24.’ This piece, like ‘Bashana Haba’Ah,’ is a song of hope. It was written in the midst of the Bosnian War and is the idea that music has the power to bring hope,” Cameron said. Additionally, Emily Haddox will be playing electric bass and Parker Carruth will be on electric guitar for an extra exciting experience.

Cameron says that having the opportunity and privilege to conduct the three VHS Ensembles is a joy. The amount of work that was put into this concert by our own VHS students is intense and she is incredibly proud to make music with them.
